Last Year, I embarked on my very first trek to Aama Yangri Peak, a journey that has left an unforgettable mark on me. Located in the Sindhupalchok district, about 90 km from Kathmandu, Aama Yangri peak trekking offers a thrilling and awe-inspiring adventure. But the road to the peak was anything but easy—full of surprises, challenges, and beauty that made the trek an experience of a lifetime.
It falls under the Helambu Circuit Trek, also known as “Hyolmo Heritage,” which is famous for its unique combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage. The area is home to Sherpa, Tamang, and Chhetri communities, and offers a unique opportunity to experience their traditions and way of life.
The trek passes through beautiful forests of rhododendron, pine, and oak. On a clear day, the view from the peak is extraordinary, offering panoramic vistas of the Langtang Range, Annapurnas, and even Everest. This trek is especially popular in the Nepalese month of Chaitra (March or April), when locals flock to Aama Yangri to witness the sunrise on the full moon day. Lamas carry out long prayers, while the locals enjoy traditional butter tea, barley beer, and local wine at the summit.
Planning the Aama Yangri peak trekking
The idea for the trek sprouted during a casual conversation between me (Manoj Panthi)with two of my office coworkers(Manu Suryabanshi & Sadin Shrestha) . We had all heard about Aama Yangri and were eager to take on the challenge. Our excitement grew, and soon, we decided to hit the road. On a bright morning at 8 AM, we set off from Kathmandu on motorbikes, full of enthusiasm and anticipation for what lay ahead.
The Journey to Tarkegyang
The road from Kathmandu to Tarkegyang is known for being rough and tough, and we definitely felt it! With every twist and bump, the ride became harder. It took us a long seven hours of careful riding to finally reach Tarkegyang by 3 PM. The road was tricky and dangerous, but the scenery made up for it, with rolling hills, green forests, and even some glimpses of snow-covered mountains.

Gazing at the majestic Aama Yangri Peak, where the sky kisses the Himalayas and every step feels like a journey into nature’s grandeur.
Once we arrived in Tarkegyang, we checked into a cozy local hotel. The village itself was enchanting, with traditional houses and a serene atmosphere that felt worlds away from the hustle of Kathmandu. That evening, we enjoyed some delicious local food and even had a mini celebration, dancing late into the night. By 11 PM, we were all exhausted but ready for the real adventure the next day.
The Trek Begins
At 4 AM the next morning, we started our trek. The sky was still pitch black, and we relied on our flashlights to find our way. This being my first trek, I had no idea what to expect, and I quickly realized we had not prepared nearly enough. We only had two bottles of water, six boiled eggs, and a few boiled potatoes between the three of us. With the steep, rocky trail ahead, this was nowhere near enough.
The first 1.4 km of the trek was a steep upward slope, covered with loose stones, making the walk even more difficult. Every step felt like a battle, and the lack of food and water drained our energy quickly. After over three exhausting hours, we finally reached the first viewpoint, or “bicam.” Although we were only halfway to the peak, the struggle was real. We still had 2 km to go, and we were already running on empty.
The Struggle to the Peak
As we kept going, hunger and thirst started to wear us down. There were no water sources along the trail, and we regretted not bringing enough food. The last part of the hike seemed to stretch on forever. After three exhausting hours, we finally made it to the top of Aama Yangri Peak, 3,771 meters high.
I was completely wiped out, but the view from the summit made it all worth it. We could see majestic mountains like the Langtang Range, Annapurnas, Manaslu, and even Everest in the distance. The vast green landscapes and untouched beauty around us were absolutely breathtaking.
The Kindness of Strangers
At the peak, with no energy left to make our way back down, I knew we needed help. Desperate, I approached other trekkers and offered to take photos and videos for them in exchange for food and water. To my relief, they generously shared their supplies with us, and we managed to regain some strength. It was a humbling reminder of the kindness you can find in the most unexpected places.
A Moment of Reflection
As we sat at the top, refueled and refreshed, we took in the breathtaking surroundings. The struggle we faced during the trek seemed to fade away as we marveled at the stunning beauty of the Himalayas. The experience left me with a deep sense of accomplishment and a newfound respect for nature and the effort it takes to explore it.

Conclusion
The trek to Aama Yangri peak trekking was an unforgettable experience. It tested my limits, but it also rewarded me with a sense of accomplishment and a deeper connection to nature. Despite the challenges, the trek allowed me to see the stunning beauty of the Himalayas and experience the warmth of the local people. For anyone looking for an adventure off the beaten path, Aama Yangri is a hidden gem that should not be missed.
